Tolstoy said, "When you understand your spiritual being and live with it, then instead of despairing, you understand the joy that can never be destroyed, which always grows."
In order to understand your spiritual being, you must begin to engage your soul.
In doing so, you will see that your soul can guide you. It will show you how to live a spiritual life, a life in harmony with your soul.
Of course, you must act on the wisdom you receive from the soul. That is where your real work lies.
And if you can implement your soul's wisdom into your daily life, you will find a joy that can "never be destroyed, which alway's grows."
In this video, I guide you through taking a conscious breath to assist you in quieting the mind, and then I invite you to be present with me for 60 seconds.
Caution, it might be harder than you think!
Be sure and note any intruding thoughts your ego may produce. Keep practicing until you can be present for 60 seconds with ease.
Then, take your practice into life and try to be present throughout your day.
I recently started attending bikram yoga classes. If you aren't familiar with bikram yoga, you may know it's other name, "hot yoga." It consists of two sets of 26 postures over the course of 90 minutes in a room heated to 105 degrees with 50% humidity.
I have certainly benefitted from it in many ways, the most important being the practice of awakening via the moving center.
It has also further enlightened me on the importance of the body-mind-soul connection.
I have really begun to understand how what you put into your body/mind and how you care for your body/mind, has a dramatic effect on your ability to be more present.
But, it's not just your moving center that needs attention. It's important that you be balanced in all four of your centers: instinctive, moving, emotional, and intellectual.

I have often said that if you slow down just enough to pay attention to what is happening in the moment, no matter where you are and no matter what you are doing, you will see that miracles are happening all around you.
The routines and behavioral habits that we develop are key to preventing us from observing the tiny miracles around us. These patterns become rote and take us out of the present such that we often passively experience life, as though on auto-pilot. As such, it becomes easy to take many things (miracles) in our lives for granted.

In Buddhism, nirvana is freedom from suffering and desire. It is transcending the ego and experiencing the true nature of reality.
When suffering and fear fall away, we experience pure joy and bliss. We lose our sense of an individual self, we understand our connectedness to everything and experience the enlightened state of nirvana.
Although some believe you need to join a monastery and study for years to experience it, nirvana is attainable to anyone. It is attainable to you, right now.
Take a mindful breath and be present to what is occurring in this exact moment in your life. Be present while you read these very words.

The answer is presence, compassion, and love.
Often, people are negative because they are in psychological and/or emotional pain. Trying to persuade or coax them out of their negative state can sometimes create more negativity.

In becoming present, your ego is taken out of the equation. This will make it easier for you to see their negativity objectively.
